A visit to the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai Sports City where the IPL trophy is on display for two days – September 17 and 18 – was an inspiring one. This trophy, which changed the history of Indian cricket and the life of many talented cricketers, has been placed prominently on display for cricket lovers in the UAE to get a closer look. As one studies it in detail, we realise that the trophy has a story to tell.
The IPL Trophy on display at the ICC Academy
At a time when cricket fever has gripped the UAE with the Indian Premier League (IPL) set to begin on September 19, if one wishes to get goosebumps, then all they need to do is to visit the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai Sports City. Walk into the academy, and as you move into the indoor practice area is displayed the glittering IPL trophy.
The ICC Academy, in association with the IPL and the BCCI, has created this opportunity to get up close and personal with the highly-coveted IPL trophy. Though I have covered many IPL editions from the press box, there was never an opportunity to view this magnificent trophy so closely.

The first thing that caught my eye was a verse in Sanskrit inscribed right in the middle of the trophy. It read “Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi”, which translates as “where talent meets opportunity.” And this cannot be more true as far as the IPL is concerned. Had players not contested in the IPL for this trophy, many of the talented cricketers may never have had the opportunity to display their skills.

A walk around the trophy takes you on a nostalgic journey. The names of the winners of the previous editions are inscribed on the trophy starting from 2008 when Rajasthan Royals won the first edition to the latest winners’ Mumbai Indians who won it in 2020.

Many youngsters and families were seen posing alongside the trophy for pictures. Since the second leg of the 14th edition of the IPL is set to commence in two days’ time on September 19, 2021, the importance of the trophy was felt even more. The clash between five-time champions and current title holders Mumbai Indians and three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings will take place a little away from this academy at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium located in Dubai Sports City.
A bouncer from Cameroon was seen guarding the trophy. He welcomed everyone with a smile and lets fans take selfies and pictures with the trophy but ensures that no one touches the glittering trophy.

While examining the coveted trophy’s exquisite creation, I could hear youngsters hitting at balls being thrown by the bowling machine. There seemed like serious players, and surely many of them must be dreaming of becoming an IPL player sometime soon in the future.
