Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell made it a special night for Kolkata through their deadly bowling spells. What was special about their bowling? How did they spoil Kohli’s 200th IPL match? What do we know about Kolkata’s debutant Venkatesh Iyer who remained unbeaten?

Kolkata Knight Riders leg-break googly bowler Varun Chakravarthy’s family name has a meaning in Indian history. Chakravarthy, in Sanskrit, means ‘universal ruler’. On Monday night at the Abu Dhabi Zayed Cricket Stadium, Chakravarthy ruled over Royal Challengers Bangalore with a deadly spell of 3 for 13 backed by Andre Russell’s 3 for 9 to bowl out Bangalore for a paltry 92 runs and ensure his team a nine-wicket win.

It was meant to be a special day for Bangalore captain Virat Kohli since it was his 200th IPL game. One may have played in the IPL for long, but the fact remains that if things don’t go the way as planned after winning the toss, the end result could well be a defeat. After the match, Kohli admitted that he did not expect the dew to kick in so early. However, the collapse started after Bangalore was 41 for 1, after which six wickets fell for a mere 25 runs.
When cricket turned cruel
Cricket can sometimes be cruel too. Kohli would have loved to celebrate his landmark with a big knock. He began by scoring a boundary off Prasidh Krishna’s third delivery of the first over for a beautiful boundary. Kohli played that shot standing tall and punching wide off the covers. In fact, he stood for a while admiring his shot that raced to the boundary. But no one expected him to fall to the very next ball from Prasidh that nipped back to trap him leg before. Most fans would have come to watch Kohli bat, but what they got to see was a spectacular bowling display from Kolkata.

What a beauty Mr. Russell
In the third over, many felt it could be Devdutt Padikkal’s day because all the three boundaries he hit were elegant. But after that, the gates opened with Lockie Ferguson having Padikkal caught behind. A double strike from Andre Russell pushed Bangalore to the back-foot, which included the prize wicket of AB De Villiers. The delivery that removed De Villiers was a beauty, a classic yorker that went through his legs clipping his back pad and hitting the stump. To get a batsman of De Villiers’ caliber out for a golden duck was remarkable. De Villiers walked off shaking his head, leaving everyone to wonder whether it was due to the disappointment of having made a mistake or whether he had not expected such a good delivery!
An apt day for a Hat-trick
The strike on De Villiers was followed by Varun Chakravarthy’s strike off successive balls. When he dismissed Glenn Maxwell and Wanindu Hasaranga off the fourth and fifth ball of the 12th over, he was on a chance for a hat-trick. Unfortunately for Chakravarthy, his next delivery to Kyle Jamieson took an inside edge, despite beating him. It would have been a special day to get a hat-trick because it was on this day (September 20, 1982) that the first-ever hat-trick in One Day International was taken. Pakistan medium pacer Jalal-ud-Din had removed Australia’s Rod Marsh, Bruce Yardley, and Geoff Lawson with the last three balls of his seventh over at Hyderabad (Pakistan).
A message for Glenn Maxwell
Glen Maxwell was Chakravarthy’s first victim. This hard-hitter, in his usual style, wanted to hit him over mid-wicket. Chakravarthy revealed why he is referred to as a mystery spinner though he is a leg-spinner googly bowler. The brilliance of that delivery lay in the manner in which he tossed it up with the flick of his fingers, and it was a treat to watch the ball drift and beat Maxwell’s mighty slog. Chakravarthy’s expression after that wicket said it all. He did not celebrate by raising his arms or running around but just gave a calm look at Maxwell telling him that if he (Chakravarthy) was not given his due respect, he (Maxwell) can be an easy wicket for him.

Iyer debut special
With such a low target score, it was easy for Kolkata to chase it without any hurry. Shubman Gill played some lovely shots to score a quick 48 but it was his partner Venkatesh Iyer who won the hearts. Making his debut, Iyer remained unbeaten with 41 and all his strokes were a delight to watch. Not many may have heard about this 26-year-old batsman who was playing with great ease. Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, before coming here for this match, he had cracked 198 against Indore in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His strokes make one wonder whether this is the arrival of another star in Indian cricket?
