Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar speaks about 19-year-old Rajasthan Royals’ opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. He believes that his determination and ability to work hard, a quality he has exhibited coming from a tough background, will bring him more glory.

Dilip Vengsarkar

Former Indian captain and coach Dilip Vengsarkar sincerely wishes for 19-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal to keep scoring in big matches. Opening the batting for Rajasthan Royals, Jaiswal top-scored for his team with 49 runs made up of two sixes and six boundaries.

Speaking to www.cricketlovers.com, Vengsarkar said: “Jaiswal has a promising future. What he will now have to do is to deliver in big games like Ruturaj Gaikwad did for Chennai Super Kings against Mumbai Indians.”

Vengskakar is proud of the fact that both Jaiswal and Gaikwad are products of his academy. Talking about Jaiswal, Vengsarkar said: “The way he has been working hard for the game is remarkable. He comes from a humble background. At the age of 13, he was selling Bhelpuri and Panipuri(Indian snacks) at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai where he was residing with the groundsmen in a tent. He was making money to chase his dream of becoming a cricketer.”

Jaiswal was born in Uttar Pradesh as the fourth of six children. His father was a small hardware store owner but Jaiswal wanted to be a cricketer. So he went to Mumbai to receive training at the famous Azad Maidan. Initially, he was given a place to stay by a small-time dairy store owner in exchange for helping him out at the store. But one day he asked him to leave since Jaiswal did not have time for the diary store duties due to his cricket training. It was then that he started living with the groundsmen in a tent at Azad Maidan after being virtually on the streets.

Vengsarkar, who is known to have backed such youngsters with talent, said: “Six years ago I took him on our academy’s tour to the UK. It was special for him. Now he plays for my club ‘Dadar Union’.”

Before the start of the IPL, Jaiswal had remarked that his recent tour to Oman with the Mumbai team would help him perform in the UAE. “I had a very good series against Oman where conditions are similar to the UAE. I’m really happy with the way I’m playing my cricket at the moment, and I can’t wait to replicate these performances in the IPL against much stronger line-ups.” Jaiswal scored over 300 runs in the One-day and T20 series against Oman.

Jaiswal had also trained hard at the Royals’ state-of-the-art facilities in Nagpur before coming to the UAE for the IPL.
