Punjab Kings’ exciting win through a six from a cricketer named after actor Shahrukh Khan had a lot to do with Bollywood movies. After his winning act, he was applauded by actress Preity Zinta a little while after the Punjabi song ‘Ishq Tera Tadpave’ was played as Khan chased the target.

Last over dramas has been happening regularly in the IPL matches in the UAE. It becomes all the more thrilling when a cricketer named after the famous Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan emerges the hero of the night and the match winner through a six off the third ball of the last over. What makes IPL matches exciting are these dramatic finishes like in the Punjab Kings versus Kolkata Knight Riders match at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday (October 1, 2021).
The last over of the match saw Punjab needing five runs to win and four runs for a Super Over finish…and it was anyone’s game. Adding to the drama was the fall of their skipper, K L Rahul, to the second ball of that last over after playing a stupendous knock of 67. That was when Khan bravely went about with his winning act of hitting a six to ensure his team a five-wicket win.
Khan hit Venkatesh Iyer high and the crowd expected it to be a catch since Rahul Tripathi was running for it. Fortunately for Khan, and unfortunately for Tripathi, the ball popped out of his hands for a six. That dramatic finish was cheered by Preity Zinta, Punjab’s team owner, who has acted in a number of films with the actor Shahrukh Khan, especially in the hit movies Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zaara, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

It would have been very pleasing for the cricketer Shahrukh Khan to get applauded by the heroine of his hero. Punjab has in the past lost matches from similar situations and hence needed a brave act. Khan, who remained unbeaten on 22 off just nine balls with two sixes and one boundary, remarked after the match: “I was brave enough to take the chance.”
As a young boy Khan’s huge passion was swimming, though his father Masood Khan was a second division league cricketer in Chennai. Khan was named after the Bollywood actor since his mother’s cousins were actor Shahrukh Khan fans and they forced his parents to name him after their hero.
When 15 runs were needed off the last 12 balls, the Punjabi song ‘Ishq Tera Tadpave’ (your love agonizes me) was played at the stadium, especially since the chase was an agonizing one. In the end, Khan walked off as if telling everyone that in times of need “I am there”, like the famous Shahrukh Khan movie Main Hoon Na (I’m there).
Khan has played similar knocks in the Tamil Nadu Premier League too while playing for a team whose name also ended with Kings – Lyca Kovai Kings. “We need three wins on the trot, and have started off well,” said Khan, who has declared that he is the man for tense moments like what it was in this match.
