Following Namibia and West Indies posting extremely small totals, fans are beginning to wonder whether players have assumed that this is a T10 tournament! We also had a West Indies player being thankful to a Covid-19 provision that got him a place in the team. Did the number 13 prove unlucky for Chris Gayle? It all happened at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday.
This story was published in The Telegraph, India
When West Indies lost seven wickets for 44 runs in 10.1 overs, a cricket fan and allrounder sent me a WhatsApp message: “Has the West Indies team mistaken this for a T10 match, especially since the UAE is the birthplace of this shortest format in world cricket?”
When England began their chase, one wondered whether the West Indies would be able to make England play at least 10 overs. Had England won in five overs, then the whole match would have been over in 20 overs! The West Indies innings lasted only 14.2 overs but England took 8.2 overs to win the match.

In Sharjah on Friday, Namibia was all out for 44 in exactly ten overs. Sri Lanka won the match in 7.1 overs, and as a result, the entire match lasted less than a twenty-over match in a Twenty20 World Cup. It was unfortunate that fans were only able to see both teams bat an average of 10 overs each. Incidentally, it was from Sharjah that the T10 tournament had commenced with the first edition held there. The latest edition of the tournament, the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, is scheduled to be held from November 19.
Following the small scores, another cricket enthusiast asked: “Will this T20 World Cup turn out to be a bowlers’ World Cup?
Hosein’s thanks to the Covid-19 provision
It is very rare that anyone thanks Covid-19. West Indies Akeal Hosein, who took an acrobatic catch to dismiss England’s Liam Livingstone and bowled brilliantly to take two wickets for 24 in his T20 World Cup debut match, is thankful to a Covid-19 provision. He was not sure of playing in the Twenty20 World Cup till about seven days ago. He was with the West Indies squad as a travelling reserve as per the allowance for teams to travel with extra players in view of the Covid-19 quarantine requirements. An injury to Fabian Allen fetched him a place in the team and into the playing eleven as well against England.
Did unlucky 13 sink Chris Gayle?
West Indies star batsman Chris Gayle was the only batsman to reach double figures yesterday. None expected such a strong West Indies batting lineup to collapse like it did on Saturday. Gayle got out for 13 to the 13th delivery he faced. A Chennai Super Kings fan believes that Moeen Ali emerged as the hero because he played for Chennai in the Indian Premier League. “He must have learned from his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni how to bowl on this wicket.” After bagging the man of the match awards, Ali had remarked: “The role in that team (CSK) is really good for me… I felt comfortable and involved with both bat and ball.”
