Dubai. Three S’s could be considered as the reasons behind India’s exit from the T20 World Cup. Selection, Schedule and absence of the Spark needed to win crucial matches. All these three S’s should be investigated and it must be brought to light as to how these blunders were committed. This is vital for the future of Indian cricket too.

This story was published in News Trail, Bangalore

Talking about team ‘Selection’, it can be easily be classified as one among the poorest. Similarly, it seems like those who worked out the Schedule for the team leading towards the World Cup had no clue on the workload a player can take before a big event. In the two crucial matches for India, there was hardly any indication of that Spark among the players that was badly needed to fight against the odds and win those matches. Did the team stand divided and unitedly fall in their mission?

Selection of the team for this World Cup was done before the Indian Premier League ended and much before the ICC deadline. It is difficult to comprehend why there was the need to hurry up with the selection. It is very evident that a thorough study of the combination needed for this world cup was not carried out. Selection should have been based on the theory of ‘horses for courses’. Those who adapted to the UAE conditions and did well during the IPL should have been given preference.

Regarding the schedule, whoever planned and approved the schedule for the team needs to be trained in scheduling in the future. Bharat Arun, bowling coach of the Indian team, during his interaction with the media, admitted that the bubble fatigue had taken its toll. It is an accepted fact now that under the current scenario no series or event can be played without players being in the bubble, and that is tough on everyone. Why did the support staff of the Indian team not voice their concerns regarding this when they received the schedule? It is important that all these factors are considered when a team’s schedule is being planned. If not, such unprofessional decisions will have an impact on a professional team.

And the lack of Spark was the result of the above two errors. It is a fact that this was the last event for Ravi Shastri as head coach and Virat Kohli as T20 captain. Surprisingly, there was not one statement made by anyone saying they want to win this World Cup as a ‘thank you’ gift for the two. Is it that the players were doubtful of winning and that it was only the Indian fans who believed that the Men In Blue were the top favourites?

Whatever happened in this World Cup should now be taken as a lesson learned, and it must be ensured that such mishaps do not happen in the future. It is also time that players who are not in the team for a series are allowed to play in other franchise leagues. The BCCI must decide whether the IPL revenue is more important than exposure for players by permitting them to play in other leagues in different conditions.
The four teams that have reached the semifinals have their players playing in almost all franchise leagues, including the T10 tournament in UAE. The glamour of a team does not lie on individual performance alone but also on how far that team reaches in a global tournament.

If Rahul Dravid has to deliver as the new Team India coach, he would need people around him who think and act professionally. Emphasis must not be on becoming the richest cricket board but in becoming the world champions in all formats of the game.
