This academy, which had shaped many cricketers, hopes to continue its mission through its fifth coaching centre in the UAE. What impressed me was the attentiveness of the youngsters to learn more about the game. Why I say ‘attentive’ is because when Sudhakar, the head coach of the academy, myself, and Ken Owino, their coach from Kenya, spoke, their expressions were clear indications of their keenness to absorb everything that was being shared with them.
Why I highlight this factor is because most youngsters today have a very short attention span. Very few actually listen, be it a speech or even coaching tips. When I spoke about how important it is to have the desire to succeed, I could see the spark in their eyes. And for this, I believe the parents of each one of them deserve a salute for inculcating such traits in them, something that will carry them a long way.
When I addressed them as the ‘future stars’, it was also important to let them know why I addressed them that way. It is only when they have that burning desire to succeed can they go on to become a star. Desire backed by devotion and determination is bound to fetch them success.
Citing examples of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Brian Lara, I reminded them that they too were all beginners like them, but it was through sheer hard work backed by the desire and their devotion and dedication that got them their status as ‘superstars of cricket’. It was also useful to point out to them that they would be training at the Oxford school, and the name Oxford reminded me of Imran Khan. It was Imran’s stupendous performances for Oxford University against visiting teams that brought him to the spotlight, after which he rose to become one of the greatest all-rounders of the game. He was not only Pakistan’s hugely successful captain who went on to lift the World Cup but he also went on to lead his country as the Prime Minister, which he is today. It was his desire to excel by putting his heart and soul into whatever he does that has made him what he is today.
Maxtalent’s has qualified coaches with experience to put these youngsters on the path to success. This includes Satish Chavan is an ICC Level 1 accredited (eight years with Maxtalent Global Sports (MGS), Ken Owino is Cricket Kenya accredited (three years with MGS), Bhavesh Tawade is Mumbai Cricket Academy ‘O’ & ICC 1 accredited who has been with MGS for the past four years, Punit Joshi is also ICC Level 1 accredited and with MGS for the last one year, Gavin Rodriques is ICC Level 1 accredited and four years with MGS. The team is led by Sudhakar Shetty who is an Australian accredited Level 3 coach.
MGS also has a few freelance coaches such as Messum Mohammad (ICC Level 1), Kalpesh Shah (ICC Level 1), Khaja Faruddin (ICC Level 1), Rajesh Gowda -BCCI Level 1.
Commenting on why Maxtalent set up the centre at Oxford School, Sudhakar said: “Maxtalent is the Cricket facilitation Academy for The Oxford School & Apple International Community School, both of which is part of the LEAMS Education group in the UAE. Over the years, this group has developed their schools on a foundation based on effective management, committed staff, and regular assessment of pupils’ work in academics & promoting sports. Their mission is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and a passion for learning & character building through sports so as to enable them to thrive as contributing citizens in a diverse and changing society.”
My encounter with a bunch of attentive budding cricketers while inaugurating the new centre and Maxtalent’s continued efforts to Horne talent.
