Delhi Capitals capitalized on Mumbai Indians’ batting weakness and sailed to victory at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium while Rajasthan’s 19-year-old opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made experts eat their prediction of a sure win for Chennai. Both matches revealed that every team has to be aware of a defeat that lurks around every match.

Ever since this IPL team, named after India’s capital became Delhi Capitals, its players seem to have realised the importance of the world ‘capitalize’ too. On Sunday (October 2, 2021), at the Sharjah Stadium, Delhi outplayed Mumbai Indians by capitalizing on Mumbai’s weaknesses.
So what is Mumbai’s weakness that Delhi capitalized on? Delhi was well aware that Mumbai’s batting hasn’t been clicking in this tournament. So they went for the kill with a plan to get them out for a small score. Mumbai could muster only 129 runs, which meant that Delhi, with 120 balls available, would be able to reach the target without much pressure, and they did just that.

Any team that has been able to identify the weakness of their opponents, plan accordingly, and then execute their plan, will emerge the winner. Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma’s comment after the match says it all. It was a confession about Mumbai’s batting. “If your batters are not going to put runs on the board, it’s going to be difficult to win games consistently. We have struggled with our batting this season. I personally accept that,” said Sharma.

It is a known fact that all IPL teams study each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Mumbai were not playing to their potential. Delhi hoped for Mumbai’s weakness to persist, and they successfully managed to sink their confidence. Sharma admitted that something has been missing, but it looked like Delhi knew what that ‘something’ was. The IPL is a franchise league in which the best cricketers play, and any team that does not play to their potential will be easily exposed.

It is strange that a team made up of batsmen like Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya fails to post a total beyond 150. At the same time, when a team’s bowlers stick to the basics and create variety in their deliveries, they are able to trap renowned batsmen. Delhi’s bowlers did just that. Avesh Khan, a 24-year-old fast bowler from Madhya Pradesh and left-arm spinner Axar Patel from Gujarat bowled to a plan and took three wickets each.

To reach their target, Delhi needed a steady batting, which has been missing from Mumbai. Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin did the job for them.

In Abu Dhabi, Chennai Super Kings seemed to have ignored the fact that defeat could be lurking around all the time. Rajasthan Royals played brilliant cricket and stunned Chennai who have already qualified for the play off. Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had to admit that they (Rajasthan) took the game away in the first six overs. The fact remained that even a century from Ruturaj Gaikwad could not ensure Chennai a victory. It was 19-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal, who through his 51 runs in 6.1 overs that upset Chennai’s plans.

Dhoni stressed the point that defeat can hit any time when he said: “It’s important to forget but also learn from this game, because there’s no point learning if this happens in a playoff match.”

This contest also gave out an important message that anyone can be a hero. Interestingly, when Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson was asked about the secret behind Jaiswal’s power, he said: “He keeps on eating.” Right now, Jaiswal has made many cricket experts eat their observation that top placed Chennai would emerge winner over Rajasthan, who were almost slipping to the bottom of the points table when the match started.
