To earn a place in the Guinness Book of World records is surely amazing. Sharjah Cricket Stadium earned this honour in 2010 and recently 16-year-old Suchetha Satish too won a place in the book. Its special to have been able to witness both these accomplishments. Both achieved it solely due to the devotion shown to their respective fields. The feats by Sharjah Cricket Stadium and that of Suchetha have similarities and none other than the legendary Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has acknowledged Suchetha’s feat.

Suchetha Satish during the Guinness Book of World record attempt

It’s a delightful feeling to have witnessed two Guinness Book of World record feats in the UAE. One was when Sharjah Cricket Stadium entered the record books for hosting the maximum number of One Day Internationals in 2010. The second happened, when on August 19, 2021, 16-year-old Suchetha Satish, sang in 120 languages in seven hours and 20 minutes to book a place in the record book. Suchetha broke the record held by Kesiraju Srinivas from India, who had set the record in 2008 by singing in 76 languages.

Suchetha Satish sings into the record books

Having seen Suchetha blossom into a talented singer from a very young age with her amazing skill of being able to sing in multiple languages, memorizing every song, I was fortunate to be one of the witnesses during her record attempt. It felt great when I signed as a witness at the Indian Counsulate General of India Auditorium in Dubai on August 19. Dr Aman Puri, Consul General of India in Dubai had inaugurated the concert.

It is cricket that brought me in touch with Suchetha’s father, Dr. T. C. Satish, a senior dermatoligist in Dubai. Dr. Satish is an ardent lover of the game and used to play cricket at the University Level while studying in Tamil Nadu. Suchetha’s mother Sumitha Ayilliath is a music lover, and together they encouraged their daughter’s talent. Incidentally, Suchetha’s grand father S.V. Jayasankar has won a place in the India Book of Records for presenting a weekly show in Kerala based on old Hindi songs (Rajnigandha Special edition in Janvani 90.8 FM community radio) every week for the last six years).

Suchetha with her parents

In 2018, Suchetha had earned the World Record Academy honour for the longest live singing concert by a child. She had sung in 102 languages for six hours and 15 minutes then. While watching her perform on that day, it was evident that she was not far away from making it to the Guinness Book of World Record.. She worked hard with devotion towards her goal and in the process also bagged the 100 Global Child Prodigy Award for singing in 2020.
India’s legendary spinner Harbhajan Singh, who is here to play in the IPL, on hearing the news about Suchetha’s feat, tweeted: “Happy and proud to have known @SatishSuchetha who is now 16 and a Guinness World Record Holder for Most Languages Sung in a Concert- She sang in 120 languages in 7 hours and 20 minutes. Girl power.” Harbhajan too has a talent beyond cricket. He writes poetry and has even brought out an album ‘Meri Maa’ (My Mother) that was a big hit.

Harbhajan Singh with Suchetha during her young days

Like Harbhajan who practices and continues to sharpen his bowling, Suchetha too spends a lot of time every day for practice to fine-tune her skills.
Suchetha’s first attempt of singing in a foreign language was in Japanese. Speaking about that experience, she said: “One day my father’s friend, who is a Japanese dermatologist, came to Dubai. When she came home, she suggested I sing a Japanese song. I liked it very much and then I decided to attempt singing in many languages.”

Suchetha is a Grade 11 student of the Indian High School in Dubai. In her record- breaking attempt, she sang in 29 Indian and 91 foreign languages, all from sheer memory. Surely that be easily classified as a genius act.

As I left the Indian Consulate auditorium after her concert that day, I said to myself that had it not been for Suchetha I may have never known how songs in Croatian, Czech, Georgian, Greek, Malay, Maltese, Mongolian, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Welsh, Xhosa, Yakut, Yoruba, or Zulu sounded! A salute to Suchetha and a thank you too!
