The battle for the title between G Force Gladiators and Springs Sports Academy under-10 cricketers produced an intense battle at the Shyam Bhatia Cricket for Care ground on Tuesday, July 6. G Force emerged champions through Tanush Jain’s fine bowling and Fathhur Rahman’s aggressive batting. Springs’ Shariq Lakdawala bagged the best batsman and player of the tournament award while his teammate Neev Jethwani emerged as the best bowler. This tournament was organised as a tribute to India’s legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar’s 50 years in international cricket.

G Force Gladiators with the Little Champs Cricket League trophy

When two well-balanced teams battle for glory, very often it is the small errors that decide the winner. This was evident at the Little Champs Cricket League organized by G Force Cricket Academy at the Shyam Bhatia Cricket for Care ground in Al Jadaf. This tournament was organised to celebrate India’s cricketing legend Sunil Gavasakar’s 72nd birthday on July 10 as well as a tribute to his 50 years in international cricket.

G Force Gladiators beat Springs Sports Academy by 43 runs in a well fought final. It was an intense battle mainly due to all the Under-10 cricketers putting their heart and soul to give their best. G Force’s in-form batsman and opener Fathhur Rahman was in his usual belligerent mood hitting sixes and boundaries with ease. He cracked 60 runs off just 23 balls with seven boundaries and five sixes. Fathhur posted a 72 run opening partnership in 5.3 overs with Neil Siddharth (10).

Springs’ Yuv Kapoor ended Fathhur’s knock by having him caught at the long-off boundary by Kridhay. So dominant was his batting that when he fell his team’s score was 80 in 6.3 overs, and of that, he had hit 60 runs.

Springs refused to be affected by Fathhur’s aggressive knock and fought back. G Force skipper Jaimeek Shah hit 24 runs while wicket-keeper batsman Karthik Krishna scored 16. Together they took the score to 123 in 15.4 overs despite some tight bowling. Springs fielded brilliantly to run out Shreyas Sethurathnam (2) and Devam Parth Desai, who had kept the scoreboard moving, with 15 runs. Arjun Rattan too chipped in with 11 runs to ensure G Force a fighting total of 174 for 8 in the allotted 25 overs.

G Force tightened the run flow despite Atharva Midha fighting hard with an unbeaten 17. He saw wickets fall at other end with Neil Siddharth dismissing Neev Jethwani, Tanush removing Kridhay, and Jaimeek striking again to trap Shreyansh Dutta leg before. When Yuv Kapoor got stumped by Karthik Krishnan off Minesh Rajesh Patil, G Force team celebrated their victory by removing the stumps, holding it high, and racing to the pavilion.

Neev Jethwani receives the Best bowler award

Mohammad Lokhandwala, former Dubai Cricket Council secretary and a prolific scorer in the UAE domestic cricket, gave away the prizes and lauded the coaches of both teams for shaping their players into a fighting unit. It was a delight for me to give away the prizes along with Lokhandwala in the presence of renowned coaches Murali Shockalingam of Springs Academy and Gopal Jasapara of G Force.

A huge gathering of parents had turned up to witness the contest and encourage the players and winners. Tanush Jain was the ‘Man of the final’ while Shariq Lakdawala bagged the ‘Best batsman and Player of the tournament award’. Neev Jethwani won the ‘Best bowler award’.
The match was televised live by G Force on Youtube with live commentary.
