Aarav Hariharan, a rising allrounder, bags six wickets for three runs in the ongoing Sharjah Cricket Council Academies Premier League T20 Under- 14 tournament, and then goes on to bag the best bowler award in the Vision Inter Academy Cricket Under-14 tournament. This youngster has already piled up over 60 awards for his match winning performances and even captains his school and academy teams
Over the years, the Sharjah Cricket Stadium has been the venue for many stunning performances. The latest being that by a 12-year-old Aarav Hariharan. This leg spinner clean bowled five of his six victims in the Academies Premier League T20 Under 14 tournament, which is being organised by the Sharjah Cricket Council at the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
This stadium has been the stage for many sterling performances from legendary batsmen and bowlers. On the same wicket, Aarav displayed his guiles while playing for Little Masters against Desert Cubs SES. He bagged the six wickets in 3.4 overs, producing two maidens and giving away just three runs to guide his team to a 25-runs win. This spell is the best recorded one among the juniors and may remain as one since this is a tough one to break so easily.
In August 2017, Luke Robinson, a 13-year-old school boy, had caught world attention when he took six wickets in six balls by clean bowling all his victims while playing for the Philadelphia Club in North-East England. Aarav’s spell of 6 for 3 betters even the best bowling figures in T20 Internationals by India’s Deepak Chahar against Bangladesh at Nagpur on November 10, 2019, when he bagged six wickets for seven runs and Sri Lanka’s Ajanta Mendis’s spell of six wickets for eight runs against Zimbabwe at Hambantota on September 18, 2012.
Sharjah has witnessed many six-wicket spells in the past, but to clean bowl five batsmen was indeed special. When asked about the spell, Aarav, like a true sportsman, gave credit to his teammates. “It was a must-win game for my team and we had posted a low score. so, as captain, I took control and kept picking key wickets which was well supported by my teammates.”
It was indeed a dream performance for Aaarav. He always wanted to bowl like the legends of the game and keeps talking about cricket and ever eager to know about great feats of cricketers. “I started playing cricket when I was five years old. My coach Prosanta Chanda from Delhi Public School Dubai believed in me and guided me to develop as a cricketer.”
Dreaming of legends also fetched him an opportunity to meet India’s Ravichandran Ashwin. “My interest in cricket grew further after I attended a masterclass with the legendary spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin. I never let a day pass without me trying out some variations in my bowling. I would watch Shane Warne’s YouTube videos and try his leg spin variations during my games,” says Aarav, who enjoys listening to stories about cricketers all the time.
“My father and mother (Hariharan and Meghna) are avid cricket followers. My elder brother Aayush Hariharan is a left-arm fast bowler, and he helps me a lot at the nets. As a family, we follow all formats of cricket. Almost all our conversations at home hover around cricket. My parents are always around during our matches…they are present in some corner watching us play, and that itself is a great motivation for me and my brother. I always believe that I can excel in cricket with this kind of support from my family, friends, and coaches.”
It is also the belief in himself that propels him to work hard. “I have been practicing with the Desert Cubs Cricket Academy and Little Masters Cricket Academy. They see my potential as a cricketer and have given me good attention acknowledging my hard work and continuing to help me develop my cricket skills.”
Aarav has already set his goals for the future. “My dream is to play cricket at the highest level and represent the national cricket team of the United Arab Emirates and even India.”
Though he does not have an idol, he keeps himself motivated all the time. “I do not have a specific cricketer as my idol. I grew up seeing the successful journey of Indian cricket and got very inspired seeing MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Ashwin in action.”
Right now his focus is to shape himself as a good allrounder. On December 28, 2020, he cracked a century (108) while opening the innings for Desert Cubs DPS against Madina Cricket Academy in the Gulf Cup Under-13 tournament at Ajman Oval. “I have been training at Desert Cubs academy for six years and for the last eight months I am training at the Little Masters Academy,” said Aarav, who has already piled up over 60 awards from his performances.
Among the many awards are three man of the match trophies for his allround performances, the man of the series, and the best batsman awards that which he won while leading the Delhi Private School in the KGS Inter School Under-10 boys tournament. In 2019, in the Sandeep Batavia Memorial Inter School tournament, he won the man of series award captaining Delhi Private School to their title triumph.
At the age of 11, he had the honour of receiving the best batsman of the year award from the legendary South African star Jonty Rhodes during the Desert Cubs Cricket Academy annual awards. He has also won the best bowler award in the Under-13 Emerging League organized by Ajman Cricket Council and also the best bowler award in the Under-14 Phantom League organized by Dubai Cricket Council.
Last Saturday, on June 5, 2021, Mazhar Khan of Sharjah Cricket Council and I were delighted to present him the best bowler award in the Vision Inter Academy Cricket Under-14 tournament. That was just a few days after he produced that splendid six-wicket spell at the Sharjah Cricket Council’s Academies Premier League.
The Academies Premier League is organised by the Sharjah Cricket Council. Fifty-four teams from various academies are participating in this league that is being held for Under-11, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 age groups. The Sharjah Cricket Council had announced that this string of tournaments would be a part of the CBFS junior development program sanctioned by Abdulrahman Bukhatir and conducted by Sharjah Cricket Council. Special scholarships are being provided to the best performers in this league.
Going by Aarav’s determination and devotion to cricket, many more awards are surely waiting for him and it will not be far when he sails towards his goal of playing international cricket.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ custom_css_main_element=”width: 35% !important;” custom_css_main_element_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_css_main_element_phone=”width: 100% !important;” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_sidebar orientation=”right” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_sidebar][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
