The Little Champs Cricket League for ages Under-10, 11, and 12 organised by G Force Academy as a tribute to India’s legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar’s 50 years of international cricket and his 71st birthday on July 10 ended with three different academies emerging champions. G Force lifted the Under-10 title, Be Spartan was the Under-11 winner, and Maxtalent won the Under-12 title. Gavaskar appreciated the initiative soon after the Under-12 final.

Maxtalent Cricket Academy – winners of the Under-12 Little Champs Cricket League

Cricketers under the age of 12 displayed tremendous fighting spirit and the ability to hold their nerves in the final of Under-12 Little Champs Cricket League organized by G Force Cricket Academy at the Shyam Bhatia Cricket for Care ground in Al Jadaf on Thursday, July 8. Maxtalent emerged champions stopping Be Spartans by six runs after a fierce battle in which the match swung like a pendulum towards both sides.

Soon after the Under-12 final, Gavaskar who had read the blog reports on the tournament, remarked, “That’s fantastic. A perfect ending to the event.” He appreciated the spirit of the youngsters in producing exciting contests. Shyam Bhatia, a close friend of Gavaskar, and the chief guest for the Under-12 final, gave away the prizes.

Bhatia has been encouraging budding cricketers around the world by supplying free cricket kits especially to nations where cricket is just making its presence. When this league commenced on April 9, Gavaskar had commented: “Let us hope a team of little champs emerges from this tournament.”

Like the Under-10 and Under-11 tournaments, the Under-12 final too produced exhilarating cricket. The Under-11 final had ended in a tie and a super over finish, and many thought that the Under-12 final too was heading towards a tie. The chase towards the target of 123 in 24.2 overs set by Maxtalent for Be Spartan made it an edge of the set affair for the large number of parents who had gathered to witness the match. The event was also televised through the G Force YouTube channel.

Runners up – Be Spartan Cricket Academy

Maxtalent openers Sourish Singla and Jaidev Gattani put on 34 runs in 6.5 overs before Sourish got bowled by Raizal Nadir on 14. Captain Sachin Prakash joined Gattani and took the score to 53 when Gattani, who hit 30 runs off 32 balls with three boundaries and one six, got caught by Raizal Nadir off Ahmed Khudadad. This was the first wicket for Ahmed Khudadad who then went on to pick three more wickets for an impressive spell of 4 for 15 from his five overs and put the breaks on Maxtalent’s run flow.

Khudadad who produced an all round show scoring 263 runs from his six matches won not only the Best batsman award but also the Player of the tournament and the Player of the final award.

Chasing the gettable target, Be Spartan received a huge setback right at the start. Their star batsman and hard-hitting opener Fathhur Rahman. who had scored 5000 runs this season, fell after hitting a six. He got clean bowled to the third ball from Kartikey Ramesh. Opener Parin Sethi too got bowled to Sahil Joshi for 5. Be Spartan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Parth Sarathy got caught and bowled by Kartikey Ramesh for 5. From 20 for 3 in 4.4 overs, captain Raizal Nadir and Ahmed Kudadad took the score 56 in 13.2 overs. Abhimaan Sharma provided the breakthrough by trapping Raizal leg before for 7. Then came another setback when one of their other consistent batsman Arav Santosh Nair got run out for 1 off a brilliant fielding and throw by Sidhya Bhandarkar to wicketkeeper Sanjith Ram.

Despite the match slipping away from Spartan’s hands, Umesh Krishna made a valiant effort through a fine knock of 28 off 30 balls with three sixes and one boundary. Sahil Kulkarni, bowling an accurate length mounted the pressure on Be Spartan and bagged three wickets for 34 runs. Skipper Sachin Prakash, who bowled the 24th over gave away only two runs and Sahil Joshi, who bowled the last over, gave away just seven runs to ensure their team a six-run win.
The organisers gave away two Player of the final awards. Maxtalent’s Sahil Kulkarni and Ahmed Kudadad of Be Spartans were adjudged the Players of the final.
