UAE skipper and opener Muhammad Waseem has been named ICC Player of the Month for May 2025. Waseem played a pivotal role in the UAE’s stunning 2-1 win over Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in May.

This is the second time Waseem has won this prestigious award. In April 2024, he edged out all-rounders Brendon McMullen of Scotland and Milind Kumar of the United States to win the title. Waseem has been outstanding in both ODIs and T20 Internationals.
Speaking to this writer following his performance against Bangladesh, this humble cricketer—who has consistently elevated UAE’s performance on the international stage—said: “It gives me great pride to lead the country’s cricket team. I’m glad I have been able to contribute in crucial matches.”

Waseem earned his place in the UAE squad through consistent performances in domestic cricket. He has been a threat to all opponents, particularly in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League. His ability to provide explosive starts has helped the UAE stun many top teams. Comfortable against both pace and spin, I had described him often as a “360-degree batter”

One of Waseem’s most remarkable qualities is his composure—he remains unfazed by the reputation of the bowlers he faces. His focus stays firmly on the delivery, and any bowler who strays in line or length often pays the price. So powerful are his shots that I have witnessed several of his sixes sail out of the stadium.
South Africa’s women’s cricketer Chloe Tryon was named the winner of the same award for her all-round performance in the Sri Lanka ODI Tri-Series. Both players were crowned winners following a global fan vote on icc-cricket.com and a panel decision from a specialist jury comprising former international players and media representatives.
Waseem scored 169 runs in five ODIs, along with scores of 54 and 82 in the first two T20Is against Bangladesh. Tryon amassed 176 runs at a strike rate of 131.34 in three ODIs and took six wickets in the tri-nation tournament in Colombo, which also featured India. She struck scores of 67 (vs. India), 35, and 74 (vs. Sri Lanka), and claimed a five-wicket haul (5/34) against Sri Lanka, which included a hat-trick.
Speaking to the ICC, Waseem stressed on why he wants to do better and win matches for UAE. He said: “I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award for the second time. I want to thank the ICC and all the fans who voted for me. I also want to thank all my teammates and the support staff—this award is as much for them as it is for me.
The month of May brought us a historic series win over Bangladesh in Sharjah. The victory reflects the growth of UAE cricket and the depth of talent in the country. What pleased me most was the performance of our debutants and youngsters, who displayed incredible passion and heart.
Our aim now is to continue progressing—not just to compete, but to beat stronger teams and make our presence felt in major international events. I believe that with the current group of players, UAE cricket will continue to thrive and prosper. I would also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for their support. On a personal level, my goal is to work even harder, remain consistent, and adapt to the demands of the modern T20 game—for the benefit of our team.”
